LI: To create a brochure on how to stay safe at the beach.

This week we did a brochure on how to stay safe at the beach.

water safty

Water safety is an important skill to understand and be able to use when in a situation around water. It’s important that everyone uses this skill especially young children. When teaching young children water safety make sure they are in a shallow area and always make sure they have supervision. When getting into a bad situation around water don’t panic put your hand up and call for help. This is important for countries that are surrounded by water because those countries have bad drowning statistics.

Matariki is the Maori new year celebration. It takes places each year when the cluster of stars known as Matariki are seen in our skies. The new year is a time for new beginnings and is a time to embrace tradition.
To strengthen our connections to Matariki we had a choice of research activities.

I enjoyed finding more about matariki because i can know more about it in the future.

greek gods

LI: To use our smart searching skills to find information about the Greek gods

Today David shared his reading challenge with us. It is all about the Greek gods and helps us to practise the skills we have been learning in our reading lessons with our teachers.

David created this task as part of his CARE award challenges. We earn CARE award badges in year 7 and 8 to show that we understand our school values. In this activity we used our smart searching skills to find information to help us complete the table.

I found this activity cool and interesting because I got to learn diffrent things about greek gods and got to identifiy the diffrent greek gods and godess.

The Greek god I found most interesting is Ares because he's is the god of war and courage and I respect that. His life story is also intresting.

evidence

Our group has been focusing on consider both perspectives. Perspectives means a different points of view. Our group has been gathering information of our topic whether it is true or not.The topic was about sacred spots from Maori mythology. One of the myths our group decided to chose was Waipoua forest,Waipoua forest is the creation story of Tane Mahuta creating the Earth by lying between his parents Papatuanuku mother earth and Ranginui the sky father.Tane Mahuta pushed and stretched his parents apart to fight for the light and space for him and his siblings.Something we found interesting about our task given was exploring our researching skills to find the evidence that is true and not about the myth we have chosen above.

main ideas

For reading we have been focusing on the Maui and Sun story. Our task was to identify the main ideas in the text. Our information we have gathered together is our opinions we have mixed together to create a more explained main ideas.Something we learnt from this activity is to read the text and identify all the different main ideas we might find important to vital.Something we found interesting about this activity is being able to identify the main ideas of a text.

venn diagram

For reading, we have been focusing on summarising text information such as stories, articles and other texts. The text we used for this reading task was the traditional Maori story of how the world came to be. This text was about Papatuanuku and Ranginui waking up from eternal darkness in earth's first light, and Tane Mahuta (one of their children) seperating them to grant his siblings and himself freedom from the darkness. Tawhirimatea was angry at the seperation of his parents.

For this task, we watched a video and read a text based off of the Maori story of how the world came to be (In the Beginning). We labelled the main parts of the video version that are not included in the written version, and labelled the main prts of the written version that were not included in the video. In the middle, we labelled the similarities between the two stories.

I really enjoyed this task and found it easy because I am familiar with identifying the key ideas and comparing the two similar but different texts/information sources.

Summarising

For reading, we have been focusing on summarising text information such as stories, articles and other texts. The text we used for this reading task was the traditional Maori story of how the world came to be. This text was about Papatuanuku and Ranginui waking up from eternal darkness in earth's first light, and Tane Mahuta (one of their children) separating them to grant his siblings and himself freedom from the darkness. Tawhirimatea was angry at the separation of his parents.

For this task, we found exactly twenty keywords to build an understanding of the text about. Keywords help us understand more in a short amount of time. Then from those twenty words, we chose six of those words to create a summary on. A summary is a short and brief description of the story so that we can understand the text in fewer words.

I enjoyed this task and found it easy because I am familiar with summarising and understanding texts using the key reading comprehension strategies so I can expand my knowledge of a story.

stoms and thunder

 LI: Summarising the text

For reading this week we read about Thunderstorms and what causes stormy weather. As a group we discuused the text, asked questions and shared facts we thought were ineresting.

Did you know that lightning happens before thunder because sound travels more slowly than light?

When thunderclouds are formed, liquid inside them turns to ice. Tiny bits of ice collide and this causes an electrical charge known as lightning.

Did you know some cretures and animals can sense when a storm are coming? Stormy weather happens when pressure in the atmosphere is low, warm air rises and meets cool dry air which condenses to form clouds.

Thunder is caused when hot air expands, making a loud noise.

why being hydrated is important

LI: to understand why staying hydrated is important for our health and learning.

Our Inquiry task was based on investigating the definition of hydration and dehydration, as well as figure out why it is important and very crucial to drink water regularly as part of our health and learning.

Our group started by writing  down the definition of hydration and dehydration and what they mean to us. We wrote the definitions of hydration and dehydration on a google draw.

For our group, hydration means having enough fluid or water ingestion. Dehydration to us means the lack of water intake by a person or living organism.

On our poster, we began including information about why hydration is important and the benefits of drinking water regularly, as well as why dehydration can be a health hazard and the symptoms of dehydration.

Some of the symptoms are: headaches, feeling dizzy or dry mouth. Not drinking enough water can lead to health hazards that could possibly link to the heart.

Drinking enough water has a lot of health benefits as well as learning benefits. Being hydrated can also make you energetic for learning new things and going to school.

I enjoyed because this was the first thing i did and it was fun to learn about the benefits and side affects of having water .

Aoteroa

LI: To explain in fewer words what the text is about

Today we expand our knowledge of the Treaty of Waitangi. The treaty was made by the British and signed by multiple chiefs of Aoteroa. The British broke the treaty over time and in return made violence for many years. Then years later the war stop and Aoteroa people put to a end.
